Join community partners for a Black History Month parade and party on Saturday, February 24. The parade begins at 11 a.m. at the Ruth Williams Opera House (4705 3rd Street) and ends at the Southeast Community Center (1550 Evans Avenue) where there will be a community celebration featuring food, entertainment, a kid zone and more from 1 to 4 p.m.
The India Basin Waterfront Park project partners will be supporting the event at the Southeast Community Center and will have have an outreach table where you can learn more about the project.
Additionally, Hip Hop for Change (HH4C), which will begin park programming at India Basin Shoreline Park this year, will be tabling with the project partners to recruit for their 2024 program. Rec and Park's EcoCenter staff will also be hosting a book reading and talk with CEO and Founder of Outdoor Afro, Rue Mapp, at this event from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Mapp will read an excerpt from her book "Nature Swagger: Stories and Visions of Black Joy in the Outdoors." Growing up on her family’s ranch in Lake County, California, Mapp quickly fell in love with our environment and has worked to inspire others in the Black community to reconnect with nature.
